This is the first in a series of photographs called "The Eye of the Artist", for which this blog was created. The artist is Mary Early, Washington D.C. sculptor and director of Hemphill Fine Arts gallery.
The series of photographs are taken by myself, Jeff Colombe, a practicing visual neuroscientist with a background in visual and performing arts. My goal for the series is to capture the anatomic detail and expressiveness of the eyes of artists using close-up lens and digital SLR, accompanied by candid portraits of the artists in their studios.
For several of these early additions, the studio was Barn 2 at Salem Art Works, Salem NY, during their annual "Salem2Salem" exchange program with artists in Germany, Switzerland, and Australia. This exchange program alternates each year between Salem, NY, and Salem, Germany. The 2013 exchange was held in NY. Barn 2 on a sunny day may have the best natural light for portrait photography anywhere, as large portions of the ceilings are milky white fiberglass and provide diffuse wide-angle illumination.
